Jay Hernishin

D&D, Vampire: the Masquerade

Hello Gamers!

My name is Jay Hernishin and I dwell in the Bethel Park area of the South Hills. My story is one that is unfortunately all too common amongst gamers. I was a quiet kid who was into art and gaming. I got bulled relentlessly throughout most of my school years. My salvation came in the form of an Advanced D&D 2nd edition players guide that my brother passed down to me in the 4th grade (that was 1984 – YES, I am that old). That book would open a world that would give me safe refuge from the storm that was my “real” life. I slowly found other kindred souls in school who sought the same thing. Together, we created a small community of wayward adventurers who would disappear during recess to the library to create and play in these fantasy worlds.

I would make RPG a main part of my hobby world through my college and adult years. Games I have run over the years are D&D (2nd edition to current), Almost all of the World of Darkness games (Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf, Mage, Hunter and Wraith), Shadowrun, Wrath and Glory (Warhammer 40k RPG) and now I am exploring solo RPG as I almost always run games and never get to play them! My GM style is story over stats. I prefer the growth of characters development over meta-gaming their stat blocks to “win” the game. The “rule of cool” is always welcome at my table and I encourage players to think outside the box. This makes the game more interesting and can often lead to a player getting more in touch with who their character is.

My daytime gig is a owner/designer with my own graphic design studio that I operate with my wife, Susie. I also have worked in and out of the tabletop game industry for almost 25 years as a graphic designer and art director. When I am not creating fantasy worlds, I also enjoy art, cooking, miniature war-gaming and fishing!
